Mushroom Death Traps!

by Pet Fashionista on July 4, 2013

fungi2Summer is a great time to spend outdoors with your dogs, but you must be careful of potential hazards to your pet. The other day I was taking our newest addition, Peanut for a walk and he just loves to sniff around and eat everything. I noticed a lot of our neighbours had poisonous mushrooms growing on their lawns. We live in a wooded area so they are bound to be around, ensuring your pet doesn’t take a big bite is of the utmost importance.

If you aren’t sure if a mushroom or any shrub is poisonous my best advice is to stay away! Untreated ingestion of even a small portion of a poisonous mushroom can cause liver injury and failure. If you feel your pet has licked or eaten anything that could be potentially dangerous I would reccommend taking him or her to the vet immediatedaly. Better safe than sorry!

Most common treatments for any ingestion of toxic mushrooms or plants is to induce vomiting and give activated charcoal to save your precious furry baby. Play safe this summer and enjoy the company of your pet!

Teaching your Pooch to Lay Down

by Pet Fashionista on November 15, 2012

Teaching your dog the hand signal down is great because it helps teach your pooch to lay down or to ask him to get down off of something. It is also a great way to start pointing in teaching your dog how to roll over!

This gesture is very simple, just hold your hand with your palm facing down towards with ground and accompany with saying down, lay down, off or whatever word you usually use. If your pooch isn’t understanding from the hand signal alone, move your palm down towards the floor to show him where to go.
